SUST 220 Water / PLS 391 Seminar in Natural Science urban wetlands tour. First stop: a walking tour of the North Park Village Nature Center's woodland, prairie, savanna, and wetland with volunteer guide Susan Kuse and RU adjunct professor / wetland scientist Marshall Eames.

We start our tour of the North Park Village Nature Center's grounds by gathering inside the main room of the Nature Center to meet our guides.

The Nature Center has all kinds of hands-on displays for aspiring naturalists of all ages, including the ever-popular bone table.
Books on natural history and ecology, including field guides, can be checked out from the Center's small library.
Lab space for experiments and demonstrations
A working beehive indoors for easy observation.
Susan starts our tour by explaining the different native ecosystems that exist in close proximity on the Nature Center's 46 acres. We'll walk through four distinct environments in less than 90 minutes.
Savanna -- an ecosystem typical of the Chicago region in pre-settlement days, but now rare due to urbanization and agriculture. Scattered trees are interspersed among grasses and forbs, indicating the savanna's status as a transition system between prairie and woodland.
